Lingmell - Route One

Start - Wasdale Head NY 186 084 Distance - 3.6 miles Ascent - 2,650 feet Time - 2 hours : 45 minutes

 

Approaching the point where AW, in his diagram of this ascent, described " a little doubt is likely to arise at point C, where a steepish wall of broken crag needs to be negotiated, but there is easy scrambling only and no real difficulty in finding a way up"
A line of cairns lead up to the scramble, a well marked ramp above a steep mossy slab
The ramp, about 25 feet in height, is well supplied with hand and foot holds
Above the ramp the path comes close to deepest section of Piers Gill where it encounters a re-entrant gully which drops vertically into the bed of the ravine.  Kate and Jasper peer into the abyss while Conor looks up the escape route, the steep but straightforward upper part of the gully

We leave the Corridor Route, which is the main path from Sty Head to Scafell Pike, to traverse over towards Lingmell Col

Kate spent a few minutes on the col just looking up to her final Wainwright before setting off on the simple climb to the summit.  I think she felt a bit sad that her long quest to complete the Wainwrights was coming to an end

Great Gable from the north top of Lingmell.  We spent over an hour on the summit, which is a magnificent viewpoint for the surrounding fells, before descending the west ridge to return to Wasdale Head
