Four hundred yards from the car park, beyond a gate, the path divides.  The Cumbria Way continues straight ahead and descends to cross Whit Beck while the path to Skiddaw continues to follow the fence towards the Hawell Monument

The Hawell Monument, a memorial to two Skiddaw shepherds, Edward and Joseph Hawell of Lonscale.  A third name, that of Robert Walker Hawell was inscribed on the base of the cross at a later date.  The epitaph on the base reads -

Great Shepherd of Thy heavenly flock
These men have left our hill
Their feet were on the living rock
Oh guide and bless them still

The memorial was reputedly erected by Canon Rawnsley, one of the co-founders of the National Trust, who was a friend of the family

The new path has been constructed using the inverted soil technique to minimise erosion on this, the most popular, route to the summit
