Although a path rises by the church it is more usual to begin the ascent from this handgate located about 150 yards east of the church where there is more opportunity to park on the wider verge. Times and distances are taken from this point |
The path rises between gorse shrubs towards an open grass slope and a rustic seat |
Binsey and Bassenthwaite Lake from the seat |
St. Margaret's Church from the seat |
Onwards from the seat the path climbs towards a pair of redundant gateposts to join a track which makes a complete circuit of the fell giving a delightful walk with excellent views |
Looking back from the gateposts |
Setmurthy Common from the gateposts |
Continue on the track from the gateposts for about 35 yards and turn left onto a path which crosses the northern slopes of the fell |
The path rises gradually and passes beneath a rock bay |
Looking over towards Binsey and Bassenthwaite Lake |
It's worthwhile taking a short diversion path to visit the rock bay |
The white cross painted on the rock face which AW noted on his diagram of this ascent is now faded, its origin and purpose is unknown |
A narrow path continues on from the rock bay to rejoin the main path |
Looking back from where the rock bay path rejoins the main path |
The main path rises towards the edge of Wythop Wood and begins to turn to the south |

Looking back from the path alongside Wythop Wood |
The main path continues on beyond a gate on its circular route around the fell, turn right here and follow the line of the wall |
The path alongside the wall climbs up to a broad col between Rivings and the summit of Sale Fell |
Looking back from the path alongside the wall |
In just under 200 yards from the gate a path turns away from the wall and climbs directly to the summit .......... |
.......... but it's much better to continue following the wall to its highest point on the col |
Lord's Seat and Broom Fell from the col |
The Skiddaw group of fells from the col |
Binsey from the col |
From the col there is a choice of paths which climb a short, but steep, bank on the southern slopes of Sale Fell |
Looking back to Rivings from the start of the climb up the steep bank |
Looking over towards Graystones, Fellbarrow and Ling Fell |
