Sale Fell - Route Two

 

 

Start - Brumston Bridge NY 186 293 Distance - 1.8 miles Ascent - 700 feet Time - 1 hour : 05 minutes

 

 
 

Brumston Bridge over Wythop Beck which is about half a mile to the east of Wythop Mill is the start of this walk
There is a parking area a few yards to the left of the bridge
A gate above the parking area gives access to the road leading to Kelswick Farm
Just beyond the gate a path climbs steeply alongside the wall towards Dodd Crag and Sale Fell's west ridge.  The path is the shortest route to the summit and provides a quick way back down to the parking area
This walk follows the road to Kelswick Farm which rises gradually above Wythop Beck

Below the farm a finger post indicates the start of a bridleway which leads to Beck Wythop on the eastern shore of Bassenthwaite Lake

The ruins of Wythop Old Church.  It was built in the mid 16th centuary on the site of much earlier chapel of ease, it was partly pulled down in 1866 when the new church was built on the other side of the fell
In 1904 a memorial stone was erected against the north wall 
Continuing on from the old church the bridleway passes through a deer gate and descends into Chapel Wood

The bridleway continues on alongside a post and wire fence below the slopes of Rivings and Lothwaite

Approaching the point where the bridleway turns off via a gate which is just beyond a short section of a stone wall
Continue straight ahead on a clear path for a further 100 yards ..........
..........to a point where a thin path turns back acutely left and climbs steeply through the gorse towards the col between Rivings and Lothwaite

Continuing on from Rivings on a clear path towards a gateway which, on the way, passes over a ruined wall and an area of ancient cultivation furrows

From the gateway there is a choice of paths which climb a short, but steep, bank on the southern slopes of Sale Fell
