Kirkstonefoot at the start of the walk, a wall stile gives access to a miners' path which leads across the intake fields towards Caiston Glen |
|
The path is well signposted as it takes a meandering course around the moraines in the field. Ahead is Caiston Glen between the steep slopes of Middle Dodd on the left and High Hartsop Dodd on the right |

The miners' path continues straight on from the stile but it can be a bit boggy and difficult to follow. Instead turn right and cross the footbridge over Caiston Beck to gain the main path on the western side of the glen, an ancient route between Patterdale and Ambleside via Scandale Pass |

Above the highest cascade is the site of the Caiston Lead Mine. The small spoil heap and flooded level are the only evidence of this unsuccessful venture to exploit a thin vein of galena ore |

The Scandale Horsehoe path parts company with the wall when it makes a sharp turn to the west. The path continues on alongside a ruined fence over Black Brow towards the summit ridge of Dove Crag |
|
A fainter path leads down beside the wall to Scandale Tarn which is well worth a visit for its view along the length of Scandale |
