Little Hart Crag - Route One

Start - Kirkstonefoot NY 401 112 Distance - 2 miles Ascent - 1,535 feet Time - 1 hour : 35 minutes

Kirkstonefoot at the start of the walk, a wall stile gives access to a miners' path which leads across the intake fields towards Caiston Glen
The path is well signposted as it takes a meandering course around the moraines in the field.  Ahead is Caiston Glen between the steep slopes of Middle Dodd on the left and High Hartsop Dodd on the right
Looking back to Place Fell and Angletarn Pikes from the field path
Looking over to the Hartsop-above-How ridge
The footbridge over Kirkstone Beck
Above the footbridge a stile gives access to Caiston Glen
Looking back to Place Fell and Angletarn Pikes from the stile
The miners' path continues straight on from the stile but it can be a bit boggy and difficult to follow.  Instead turn right and cross the footbridge over Caiston Beck to gain the main path on the western side of the glen, an ancient route between Patterdale and Ambleside via Scandale Pass
Middle Dodd from the path to Scandale Pass
Looking back to Place Fell and Angletarn Pikes
Scandale Pass at the head of Caiston Glen
Looking back to Kirkstonefoot beneath the steep slopes of Hartsop Dodd on the right
Caiston Beck has a series of attractive cascades and waterslides which add interest to this ascent
The lower cascade in Caiston Glen
The highest cascade in Caiston Glen
Above the highest cascade is the site of the Caiston Lead Mine.  The small spoil heap and flooded level are the only evidence of this unsuccessful venture to exploit a thin vein of galena ore
Looking back from the site of the Caiston Lead Mine
The upper part of Caiston Glen leading to Scandale Pass
Near the top of Caiston Glen the summit of Little Hart Crag comes into view
The top of Scandale Pass marked by a solitary cairn and a dilapidated dry stone wall
The summit of Little Hart Crag from Scandale Pass
Red Screes from Scandale Pass
A well used path follows the north side of the wall, part of the Scandale Horsehoe walk from Ambleside
Looking over to Low Pike and High Pike
The Scandale Horsehoe path parts company with the wall when it makes a sharp turn to the west.  The path continues on alongside a ruined fence over Black Brow towards the summit ridge of Dove Crag
A fainter path leads down beside the wall to Scandale Tarn which is well worth a visit for its view along the length of Scandale
Scandale from Scandale Tarn
Low Pike and High Pike from Scandale Tarn
Little Hart Crag from Scandale Tarn
Rejoining the Scandale Horsehoe path which is only followed for a short distance before leaving it to gain a small col to the west of Little Hart Crag
The head of Windermere from the col
High Bakestones from the col
Dove Crag from the col
St. Sunday Crag with the summit of Helvellyn visible over Deepdale Hause
It's a simple climb from the col to reach the summit of Little Hart Crag
