Irton Pike - Route Two

 

Start - Irton Park NY122 012 Distance - 0.5 mile Ascent - 370 feet Time - 20 minutes

 

 

A parking area beside an old quarry on the Santon Bridge ~ Eskdale Green road is the starting point for this walk
A short distance above the car park is the start of a path leading to Wasdale which is the usual way to climb Irton Pike
However we continue further along the road to start the ascent from the main forestry road

We only follow the main forestry road for 100 yards before turning off it onto an older road
A small cairn situated 35 yards from the road junction indicates the start of path which leads directy to the summit.  The lower section of the path rises through an extensive area of self-seeded birches which restrict views

The Whit Fell group of fells through the thicket of birch trees
Gradually the path emerges from the tree cover .....
..... to reveal the summit of Irton Pike 
Muncaster Fell across the valley of the River Mite
The path veers left to climb up to a level shoulder on the western side of the summit
Green Crag and Great Worm Crag from the climb to the west shoulder
Looking over towards Lank Rigg, Whoap and Caw Fell from the climb to the west shoulder
Rough Crag, Hesk Fell, Woodland Height, Whit Fell, Burn Moor and Black Combe from the climb to the west shoulder
Black Combe and Muncaster Fell from the path to the west shoulder
Approaching the west shoulder
Haycock, Scoat Fell, Red Pike and Yewbarrow from the west shoulder
A glimpse of Illgill Head and Whin Rigg through the trees on the west shoulder
It's only a short climb from the west shoulder to reach the summit
