Hen Comb - Route One

 

Start - Loweswater NY 141 209 Distance - 2.3 miles Ascent - 1,300 feet Time - 1 hour : 30minutes

 

 

Church Bridge in the hamlet of Loweswater is the starting point for this walk
Mellbreak dominates the view ahead as we walk along the lane towards Kirkgate Farm
Looking back to Church Bridge and the Kirkstile Inn
 Looking over to Grasmoor and Crummock Water
Beyond Kirkgate Farm the lane continues on as a walled bridleway heading towards Mosedale
Looking over towards Carling Knott and Burnbank Fell
Darling Fell and Low Fell from the bridleway
Looking back to Whiteside and Grasmoor
The lane ends at a gate which gives access onto a track following a wall below a small plantation
Hen Comb and Little Dodd from the Mosedale bridleway
Crossing Mosedale Beck.  This can be a very difficult proposition after heavy rain

Higher up we join a quad-bike track
Looking back to the Vale of Lorton
The track is only followed for a short distance before we turn onto a path which crosses a fence onto another quad-bike track
Looking back to Loweswater, Darling Fell and Low Fell
Whiteside and Hopegill Head across the north ridge of Mellbreak
High Stile and Red Pike beyond the head of Mosedale
The track avoids the distinctive summit of Little Dodd but it's well worth a visit for its view over the valley of Whiteoak Beck

Traversing below Little Dodd the summit of Hen Comb comes into view with Starling Dodd on the left horizon

Looking over to Red Pike and High Stile.  Fleetwith Pike appears across the slopes of Mellbreak on the left with Pillar over Gale Fell on the the right
After a fairly level walk along the ridge from Little Dodd the path meets a cross-ridge fence below the final steep rise to the summit of Hen Comb
