The lane approaching Seathwaite Farm is the starting point for this walk |
Seathwaite Farm |
Opposite the farmhouse an archway through the farm buildings gives access to a walled lane |
The lane leads to a footbridge over the River Derwent |

Thornythwaite Fell above Seathwaite Farm |
The path encounters a rock gully which requires some mild scrambling |
Looking down the rock gully |
Above the gully the path climbs more easily to the intake wall and a rock shelf which is good viewpoint |

From the rock shelf the path follows the intake wall for a short distance to a handgate |
The gate gives access to the open fellside below the hanging valley of Gillercomb |
A short distance above the intake wall the path comes close to a ravine containing the upper falls of Sourmilk Gill |

Shortly after passing a marker cairn, leave the main path and descend to cross the stream above a series of small cascades. Make a pathless ascent of the opposite slope aiming for the saddle of Gillercomb Head to join the ridge path which runs between Honister Hause and Great Gable |

Climbing towards Gillercomb Head. AW recommended using a grassy rake to the left of the rock outcrops in the centre of the photo but it's quite easy and more interesting to thread between the outcrops |

The path to Honister Hause curves around the western slopes of Brandreth and avoids the summit. Leave it and follow the line of the ruined Ennerdale boundary fence which is marked by old iron posts and a few cairns climbing directly up the broad south ridge |
