Barf from Powter How
Barf from Powter How, there is a parking area beside the bus stop and a larger, more formal, car park to the north of Powter How
A short distance along the lane towards Beckstones a handgate gives access to the fell.  This the alternative start along the north side of Beckstones Gill which visits The Clerk and The Bishop on the climb to Barf by the direct route
A little further along the lane a simple stile gives access to the woodland path on the south side of Beckstones Gill
The path in the Beckstones Plantation
This is the popular route to climb the fell.  The path rises quite steeply through the dense conifers
Beckstones Plantation
Looking back on the initial steep section of the path
The conifers greatly restrict the views on this lower section
Midway along the path above Beckstones Gill
A glimpse of Skiddaw over the tops of the conifers
The small rockface which AW described in his diagram of this ascent route
All safely up, it looks a little more intimidating when seen from above
On the upper part of the rockface.  The way up is clearly signposted
Above the rockface the fellside has now been mostly cleared of trees
Looking up to the top of Beckstones Gill
From the same position looking across the west ridge of Barf to Skiddaw
The path re-enters the forest near the top of the gill
Looking back from the same position across the Vale of Keswick to Clough Head, Great Dodd, Stybarrow Dodd and Raise
The section of path through the trees is short and it soon joins a forest road which AW described as  "a considerable engineering achievement"  in his diagram of ascent.  Here looking up the road rising through the Beckstones Plantation
The route to Barf takes a right turn along the road towards the head of Beckstones Gill
Fifty yards along the road a path branches off it and descends to a stile above the top of Beckstones Gill
The path crosses the gill and begins a rising traverse across the western slopes of Barf
Looking back to the stile from the climb
From the same position looking up the path across the slope
Looking across to the Beckstones Plantation.  The path used for the ascent can be seen rising through the area that has been cleared of trees
